London-based sextet Flat Party have released their energetic new single, ‘Shotgun’. The track is defined by the swaggering lead vocal of Jack Lawther, who delivers his self-deprecating lyrics over 80s-inspired grooves. Their blurry take on alt-rock is filled with twists and turns, with angular guitar riffs colliding with jumpy, unpredictable drumming. The track is “an ode to hedonism, but it’s also full of self-loathing and anxiety. There’s a lyric in there based on a quote I read that was ‘The sun never sets on the British Empire, because even God couldn’t trust the English in the dark,’ I thought that was brilliant.” You can catch the band live at the single’s launch party this Friday 26th July at Brixton’s The Windmill. -Dan Peeke
